Moving To La Quinta. Your Local Guide

white background for site.png

If there's one city in the Coachella Valley that perfectly balances small-town charm with resort-style living, it's La Quinta.

At the heart of the city is Old Town La Quinta, where you'll find locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, art galleries, and year-round community events. On Sundays, the Certified Farmers Market brings locals and visitors together to shop for fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, and handcrafted goods.

La Quinta is also home to the iconic La Quinta Cove, a neighborhood nestled against the Santa Rosa Mountains and known for its incredible views, unique character, and direct access to some of the best hiking trails in the Coachella Valley. Add in world-class golf, beautiful resorts, and endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, and it's easy to see why La Quinta is one of the desert's most desirable places to live.

Fun fact: Actress Jenna Ortega, best known for playing Wednesday Addams in Netflix's Wednesday, grew up right here in La Quinta.

It's the kind of place where visitors often find themselves saying, "I could see myself living here."

Things To Do & Places To Visit La Quinta

Old Town La Quinta is the heart of the city and one of my favorite places to spend an afternoon. Designed with a charming Spanish-inspired atmosphere, it's a walkable district filled with locally owned boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries, and public gathering spaces that give it a true small-town feel.

Whether you're grabbing a slice at Stuft Pizza Bar & Grill, enjoying authentic Mexican cuisine at Casa Mendoza, browsing the local shops, or simply relaxing with a coffee, Old Town is a place where it's easy to slow down and enjoy the day. On Sundays, the Certified Farmers Market brings even more life to the area with fresh produce, local vendors, baked goods, flowers, and handcrafted items.

Whether you're visiting for lunch, dinner, or one of the many community events held throughout the year, Old Town La Quinta is a must-visit destination and a great example of the welcoming atmosphere that makes La Quinta so special.

Each January, La Quinta takes center stage as The American Express brings PGA TOUR professionals, celebrities, and golf fans from around the world to the Coachella Valley. While the tournament itself is a huge draw, it’s become much more than just a golf event.

What many longtime locals still remember is that this tournament was originally known as the Bob Hope Classic, one of the most iconic celebrity golf events in the country. Over the years, it has evolved into today’s American Express, but it still carries that same desert tradition of blending top-tier golf with a fun, relaxed, and community-focused atmosphere.

The tournament week also features live concerts that bring a festival-like energy to the event. I’ve personally seen artists like Stevie Nicks perform during tournament week, adding another unforgettable layer to an already special experience.

La Quinta Civic Center Park is one of those quiet local spots that shows the everyday side of the city. Centered around a peaceful pond with ducks, a fountain, and shaded walking paths, it’s a simple but beautiful place to take a stroll and enjoy the desert outdoors.

You’ll often see locals walking their dogs, families bringing kids out for fresh air, or people just sitting and enjoying the scenery. On cooler weekends, especially during the fall and winter months, it’s also a popular backdrop for engagement photos, wedding photos, and quinceañera or sweet 16 photo shoots.

The park also serves as a gathering place for community events, including the city’s annual birthday celebration and other local festivities hosted by La Quinta throughout the year.

Located right next to the La Quinta Museum and City Hall, it’s an easy stop if you're already in the area. While you're there, it’s worth stepping into the museum or taking a slow walk around the grounds to enjoy the setting.

The La Quinta Museum is a small but meaningful stop in the heart of the city that highlights the history, culture, and growth of La Quinta and the surrounding Coachella Valley. Through rotating exhibits, local artifacts, and educational displays, the museum tells the story of the area’s transformation from early desert settlement to the vibrant community it is today.

It’s an easy, quick visit, but one that gives you a deeper appreciation for the city beyond the resorts, golf courses, and Old Town charm.

The Cove Oasis Trail (often called the Cove Oasis Trailhead) is one of the most popular access points to La Quinta’s hiking system at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains. From here, you can connect to a variety of trails ranging from easy scenic walks to more challenging desert hikes, all with incredible mountain and valley views.

One of the most popular routes is the easy loop through the Cove Oasis area, a short, mostly flat walk that winds through desert landscaping, open space, and shaded picnic areas. It’s a great spot for a morning walk, light hike, or just enjoying the quiet desert surroundings before the heat sets in.

From this trailhead, more advanced hikers can also connect to longer routes like Bear Creek and Boo Hoff, which climb deeper into the mountains for those looking for a bigger challenge.

Like most desert trails in La Quinta, timing matters. Early mornings or later evenings are best, especially during warmer months, when temperatures can rise quickly and conditions can become extreme. Always bring water, wear proper footwear, and avoid midday hiking in the summer heat.

Great Shakes

The menu is written on a giant chalkboard, and the list of shakes seems to go on forever. Every shake is made to order and topped off with one of their signature mini donuts perched right on the straw. They even offer lactose-free options! Also on the menu are malt, floats, & dole Whip

Whether you're strolling downtown after dinner or just looking for the perfect dessert, Great Shakes is a Palm Springs staple that's absolutely worth the stop. Just don't blame me if you find yourself planning your next visit before you've even finished your shake.
