Sometimes the best experiences are the ones you sign up for without overthinking. That was exactly the case with Black History Paint Night, hosted by the City of Palm Springs Parks & Recreation. 🎨🖌️👨🏽🎨
We honestly didn’t know what to expect when we registered, but we’re so glad we went.
The evening was centered around the work of Alma Thomas, a groundbreaking Black artist known for her vibrant, abstract paintings made up of colorful squares and rectangles. One of the most inspiring parts of her story is that she didn’t truly begin painting until later in life, proving that creativity doesn’t run on a timeline. 😃

The staff did an incredible job creating a welcoming, relaxed environment. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and genuinely happy to be there. It felt less like a formal class and more like a community gathering centered around creativity and connection.
Along the way, I even made a new business connection. One of the staff member’s partners joined the paint night as well and works in insurance. Conversations like that are always a reminder that you never know who you’ll meet when you show up.
There was even couple visiting from Gilroy, CA, which immediately made the night feel like an even smaller world. Gilroy is only about an hour from where I grew up in Monterey County, so that connection felt especially full circle. 🌍
Like any community event, there were a few unruly kids whose parents were trying their best to paint. The Parks & Rec staff handled it beautifully, quickly putting together a paper racetrack to keep the kids entertained so the adults could enjoy the experience. It was thoughtful, creative, and honestly impressive to watch them adapt on the fly. 🤩
All in all, it was a great reminder of how valuable these free, city-hosted events really are. They bring people together, celebrate culture and history, and create space for creativity without pressure.
We snapped a few photos from the night and left feeling inspired. We’ll definitely be attending more events like this put on by cities throughout the Coachella Valley, and I’d highly recommend checking them out if you ever get the chance.
Moments like this are why I spotlight local events on my WHCV blog.
