If you’ve been following JoMaine’s Kitchen, you know I like to keep things simple, fun, and full of flavor. This week’s recipe came about because we’ve just moved, and, honestly, with all the unpacking and settling in, we’ve been eating way too much fast food.

Back when we lived in Palm Desert, eating out wasn’t as tempting because—did you know?—there are no drive-thrus on Highway 111 in Palm Desert. I believe it’s actually an ordinance that prohibits them! That little detail definitely helped us avoid fast food more often than not.

Spam Musubi Bowl | My take on a Hawaiian classic!

Now that we’re in a new spot, we’re surrounded by options. One of the newer places nearby is Ono’s Hawaiian BBQ. I tried it for the first time recently and was pleasantly surprised. It sparked a couple of recipe ideas for the kitchen, starting with this Spam Musubi Bowl.

Traditionally, Spam musubi is made by wrapping rice and Spam in seaweed, kind of like sushi but Hawaiian style. My version keeps all the flavors you love but skips the wrapping. Because let’s be real—sometimes you just need something quick & easy to throw together!

And yes… I may or may not be working on my own version of Ono’s tuna mac salad too, so stay tuned for that one!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 can spam

  • 2 tbsp teriyaki sauce

  • 2 tbsp mirin (optional)

  • Furikake

  • Sticky rice

How To Make It

  1. Cut spam into equal-sized cubes.

  2. Cook in a med-high heat pan until all sides have been nicely browned.

  3. Add teriyaki sauce and mirin if you’d like.

  4. Continue stirring for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the spam well.

  5. Serve spam on top of rice, garnish with furikake and anything else you’d like!

That’s it. You’ve got a Spam Musubi Bowl that is fast, flavorful, and portable!!! 🍚
